The first one-year cycle of the #startupdiplom internship at TechnoSpark was completed on May 15, 2020. Throughout the academic year 2019-2020, the final-year students of Tyumen and Tomsk State Universities have been working at technological companies, acquiring basic entrepreneurship experience. Upon the completion of the internship, all the alumni became the leaders of startups and technology transfer programs in Tyumen, Tomsk, and Troitsk.
“The graduate employment issue is becoming more and more urgent in the currently aggravating situation on the labor market. This year’s graduates will have to compete both with other graduates and all those who have lost their jobs due to the economic recession induced by the pandemic and the reduced oil prices. We are solving the problem of creating jobs for graduates in a moderate amount but our efforts are consistent. They include the unique entrepreneurship competence diagnostics that we have developed and which we can use to test tens of thousands of students per year. They also include the specially organized 9 months internship on the position of a technological startup leader, after which the majority of interns choose to stay in technological entrepreneurship. This means that they do not only occupy the created jobs but also make up new ones in the startup building process,” said the shareholder and CEO of the TechnoSpark Group of Companies Denis Kovalevich.
The participants of the first cycle of the #startupdiplom internship built their startups in the sphere of applied genomics, industrial microbiology, wearable electronics, composite engineering and industrial design. The students introduced a DNA-based lawn disease diagnostic service, completed the development of a test system for microbiological control of biocorrosion on oil mining equipment and ran several pilot projects with the oil companies, launched a yeast depository and an innovative contamination control service for craft beer brewing. One of the startups gave up on its initial technological hypothesis, saving the investment that could have been spent on a hopeless concept; as a result, the company started working on a new pipe cleaning product. The interns formulated terms of reference for a serially produced brain concussion detection device model designed for athletes. They created a prototype of a composite hockey stick with the innovative properties achieved by integrating carbon nanotubes and synthetic diamonds into the material; the new generation sticks will have been produced by the end of summer. In industrial design, the interns managed to adjust the company to work in the pandemic by starting a virtual startup stand service for virtual forums and professional exhibitions.
The #startupdiplom is an entrepreneurship internship program at the best technology park and venture building company of Russia, first tested in cooperation with Tyumen and Tomsk State Universities in the academic year 2019-2020. The qualified final-year students move to Troitsk to do an internship at startups of the TechnoSpark Group of Companies at the position of startup chief executives, or venture builders. By the end of the program, the students will be able not only to write their qualification papers but also to demonstrate the achievements they have done during the 9 months of the internship with the actual startup materials.
Next academic year, the number of #startupdiplom internship participants is expected to increase by several times. Besides young people from Tyumen and Tomsk State Universities, the qualifiers 2020-21 will be accessible to students from Tomsk Polytechnic University, Ural Federal University, Kabardino-Balkarian State University, Don State Technical University and Kuzbass State Academy of Agriculture. Several more universities are preparing to join during the summer.
I am sure that the upgraded Ministry of Science and Higher education is ready to adopt and scale the TechnoSpark experience for the entrepreneurship internship to be accessible to students from other regions.
