Chance for Nizhny Novgorod students to present technological startup results as their graduation theses / Government of Nizhny Novgorod Region

Nizhny Novgorod Research and Education Center of world class and TechnoSpark, one of the best-performing country’s technology parks, will cooperate under the #startupdiplom program. No matter the year of study and major, any student can take part in the qualifications. The students in their fourth year of any Bachelor’s course, the fifth-year at a Specialist’s course and the second-year students of a Master’s degree course will have an opportunity to defend their graduation theses in the form of a startup while for other students it may be the topic of their term paper.

Gleb Nikitin, the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod, noted that this met the main goals of the world-class Research and Education Center.

“Lots of young people studying at our universities are talented, capable of generating ideas and building teams. It is crucial to make their aspirations real at the stage of studies. One of the main objectives of the Science National Project initiated by Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, is to combine the theory and the practice, to encourage technology entrepreneurship,” said Gleb Nikitin.

“Due to such solutions, the students can take the first step toward starting their own business, and then it is possible to enable other types of support: various grants, subsidies, tax exemptions. In our region, the infrastructure for such projects is under active development, and there are a lot of opportunities for working in a team, where everyone is on the same page,” Gleb Nikitin added. The program members will have an internship at the TechnoSpark Group of Companies. They will spend eight months in the position of a leader of a real startup operating within one of the industries of the future: robotics, photovoltaics, power industry, microelectronics, genomics, personalized medicine, new materials, unmanned transport, etc. The final outcome will be a graduate qualification work presenting the results of the startup launch.

According to the program authors, the students will not have to look for investments unassisted. TechnoSpark invests its own seed capital to all the interns’ startups by the same rules and standards that are used for any other company startups. The students will have to analyze the technology and the industry, to make economic and investment calculations, to arrange product development and engineers’ activity, as well as to prepare and launch sales of the technological product. It is on them to organize their work.

To get into the program, the students have to pass three qualification stages:

  1. An online entrepreneurship game, solving case studies by TechnoSpark, and a questions-and-answers session with TechnoSpark regarding the basic concepts of the technology entrepreneurship following the performance in the previous tasks.
  2. The students shortlisted online will play the off-line game Build a Company. Sell the Company.
  3. The shortlisted students will have an interview with TechnoSpark representatives and a final interview with the company CEO.

The program is open to participation by students, post-graduates, and junior university professionals aged 18 to 39. The registration and the first qualification stage are available from August 17 to  September 13 at
