TechnoSpark introduces a new standard for the oil production service

BioScreen, a biotech startup and part of the TechnoSpark Group of Companies of the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs of the Rosnano Group, created a bacterial contamination monitoring technology aimed at reducing losses from oil field equipment damage.

Using TechnoSpark’s platform solution for industrial microbiology, BioScreen identifies 8 classes of pipeline-destroying microorganisms, such as archaea and bacteria. These microorganisms result in equipment corrosion, while the methods of fighting against each class are of different nature. Based on service data, technologists can accurately select biocides to prevent equipment damage and oil spills.


A transition from the traditional microbiological culture method to the next-generation sequencing (NGS) in use is a transition from analog to digital methods. Innovative oilfield service companies have already tested our technology and obtained accurate data arrays allowing the symbiosis of big data and applied research.

The company has been developing this technology since 2018. In 2020, we have put a new expanded version of analysis on the market and conducted a study of more than 60 samples from different Russian oil fields, finding 27 species of microorganisms dangerous to equipment. The analysis was carried out for both existing wells and field geological exploration where it was necessary to assess potential risks. As of today, the technology aimed at monitoring bacterial contamination of oil field equipment by the NGS method is ready to be included in the technical safety standard for oil equipment and to be used on a massive scale.


“The microbial contamination analysis is a part of microbiological contamination assessment protocols prepared by oilfield service companies. In the United States, the NGS method is already widely used for these purposes. We hope that in Russia in the nearest future our quick and accurate technology will be included in the Russian recommendations, and the oil industry will optimize its methods against microbiological corrosion,” said Gleb Speshilov.

BioScreen is Russia’s first high-precision microbiological monitoring service for oil production facilities. The company conducts microbial profiling of samples using the next-generation sequencing method. This method is much quicker than traditional ones, provides accurate quantitative data and practically eliminates the human factor.

Other TechnoSpark startups operating on the same technological platform are GreenGene (lawn diagnostic service) and BeerGenomics (microbiological control of craft beer).
